Welcome to Hampshire

This map pinpoints some of the most exciting cultural venues in Hampshire.

We will showcase, connect and empower its creative economy

Bursledon windmill

Bursledon Windmill is Hampshire's only working windmill. Built in 1814, it was restored and reopened in 1990 as a working windmill and heritage visitor attraction.

Other buildings on the site include the Chineham Barn, rescued from demolition, which houses the ticket office and other visitor facilities. The Hiltingbury Granary is an 18th century farm building, which stores the grain. The pond, to water the farmers horses, has been re-dug in its original location.

Your Windmill Visit

Entrance to the windmill building is part of the guided tours which leave every half hour. If you are travelling a long way to visit, please phone ahead to find out whether these tours are busy. Please be aware that much of Bursledon Windmill is an outdoor site. It is cold in the winter and hot in the summer, and it may get wet and muddy underfoot if it rains. Please wear clothes and shoes suitable for the site. Visitors in flip flops or stilettos will not be allowed above the ground floor of the windmill.

Please note the last tour of the day leaves at 3.30pm.

Lots to see and do

You can also take a short walk around neighbouring Windmill Wood, a young woodland habitat supporting a wide range of wildlife including woodpeckers. See one our two films - a documentary explaining how the machinery of the mill works, and a newly commissioned animation of 'Phoebe Mouse' showing the potential perils of running a windmill! Try grinding flour by hand in the barn using the ancient saddle quern or the medieval rotary quern.

Outside of opening hours

Join us for event days - please note that on event days we will be offering different activities to those listed above, and as such the windmill building may not be open for tours. Events on days other than Sunday may charge different admission prices to our standard ticket prices.

Booked Group Windmill Visits (including schools), as described above can be made for most weekdays subject to availability.
