I’ve found something – what should I do?

Is it small enough or strong enough to lift safely and easily?

No

  • Cover the find with a suitable material
  • Mark the spot clearly
  • Note the exact location (grid reference if possible)
  • Tell the landowner
  • Contact your local Finds Liaison Officer

Yes

Is it from a previously undisturbed archaeological context eg not a surface find or from ploughsoil/similar?

Yes

  • Cover the find with a suitable material
  • Mark the spot clearly
  • Note the exact location (grid reference if possible)
  • Tell the landowner
  • Contact your local Finds Liaison Officer

No

  • Lift the object and support it carefully
  • Record the exact find spot (grid ref if possible)
  • Don't rub the dirt off or attempt cleaning
  • Label a polyethylene seal-top bag with the find spot and date (use a waterproof pen)
  • Punch a few holes in the bag to prevent condensation forming (unless the object is waterlogged)
  • Place the find carefully in the bag
  • Keep individual finds in separate bags
  • Determine the material and storage requirements.
  • It is recommended that you tell your local Finds Liason Officer.
