J Gould 1804-1881

John Gould was born in Lyme Regis, Dorset and is better known today as the author of numerous books of birds, illustrated by artists of the time.

His taxidermy business was set up c1825 and he obtained a Royal Warrant c1827. He worked for the Zoological Society for a few years until his resigned to pursue his literary career. (Ref: Frost, C: 1987: A History of British Taxidermy. The Lavenham Press)
