Tudor life

Tudor Life

A great day out and an opportunity to explore what was once the largest private house in Tudor England, owned by a family with close connections to all the Tudor monarchs, and survivors of every twist and turning point.

Session objectives

Working together as part of an investigative team, students will examine a range of sources, using the site, artefacts recovered there and other evidence to uncover facts about the Tudors and their lives at Basing House.

This session supports the following National Curriculum 2014 topics for KS2 History:

  • Local History Study
  • A study of an aspect or theme in British history that extends pupils’ chronological knowledge beyond 1066

The session also supports historical enquiry, historical interpretation, independent enquirers, creative thinkers, team workers and effective participants.

Pupils will:

  • Use the skills of an archaeologist to look at Tudor artefacts from Basing House
  • Investigate the differences between the lives of rich and poor in Tudor times at Basing House
  • Examine the remains of the house to reconstruct the lives of people living there in Tudor times
  • Recognise the importance of preserving the past for the future
  • Work in teams to explore evidence from the past
