Titchfield Haven, looking south towards the Isle of Wight c1875 by Charles Blatherwick

Titchfield Haven sits at the mouth of the Titchfield Canal, Britain's second oldest man-made waterway, constructed by The Third Earl of Southampton in 1611. The canal effectively replaced the tidal channel of the Meon Estuary, changing the local landscape for ever. This finely painted panoramic view of Titchfield Haven, looks toward the Isle of Wight. The painting shows the varied landscape, thatched cottage on the left, children in period dress, and a few domestic sheep.

Bequest by Anna Alston in memory of her late husband.
